Veer Bal Diwas is observed annually on December 26th in India. This day honors the remarkable sacrifice and bravery of the four Sahibzadas of the tenth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Specifically, it commemorates the martyrdom of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, who gave their lives for their faith at the tender ages of just 6 and 9.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji had four Sahibzadas—Ajit Singh, Jujhar Singh, Zorawar Singh, and Fateh Singh. In 1699, Guru Ji established the Khalsa Panth, and his four sons played a significant role in this community. During Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s time, the Mughals were in power, and the Sikh community was resisting their oppression. The Sahibzadas stood alongside their father in this fight, embodying his vision.
In 1705, the Mughals made every effort to capture Guru Gobind Singh. During this turmoil, Guru Ji became separated from his family, and his wife, Mata Gujri, took their two young Sahibzadas—Zorawar Singh (9 years) and Fateh Singh (6 years)—to a hidden location. Unfortunately, a traitor named Gangu betrayed them to Nawab Wazir Khan of Sirhind.
Nawab Wazir Khan attempted to humiliate the young Sahibzadas and offered them a chance to convert. However, both boys steadfastly refused to abandon their faith, demonstrating incredible courage. In response, Wazir Khan had them bricked alive in a wall. Their martyrdom occurred on December 26th. Upon learning of their sacrifice, Mata Gujri also chose to end her life.
The Government of India officially recognized Veer Bal Diwas in 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significance of this day, choosing to celebrate it in honor of the sacrifices made by the revered Sahibzadas of the Sikhs. This day serves as a tribute to the bravery and selflessness of the Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
